Los Pedroches, infinite nature.
Los Pedroches and the Sierra Morena area have their own characteristics that are different from those of the other neighboring regions. The dehesas ecosystem here reaches a high degree of representation since, according to what is said, the eastern part of the region has the highest density of holm oaks in all of Spain.
In the pseudo-steppe area, with little density of holm oaks and located to the west of the region, the spectacle of the wintering crane stands out, a migratory species from northern Europe that moves to the region every winter to feed on acorns.
On the banks of rivers such as the Guadalmez, Zújar and Yeguas rivers (Cardeña-Montoro Natural Park), we can find species such as the otter or the kingfisher, accompanied by birds such as the gray heron or the black stork, that nest in their riverside forests.
The southern sierra of Los Pedroches has great biodiversity, whether within the olive groves of the sierra or in the Mediterranean forest patches, in non-arable areas, such as those found in La Chimorra or on the top of Loma of Buenavista. Here we can find species such as kermes oak, myrtles, mastic, brambles, among others that give shelter to countless birds. This diversity is even more enhanced on the banks of its rivers and streams. A good example of this are the beds of the Cuzna, Guadalbarbo and Gato rivers, populated with ash trees, alders, willows and poplars, surrounded by an undergrowth where species such as oleander and brambles are found.
In the mountain areas there are deers and wild boars, near the elevations of La Chimorra and Calatraveño, where they coexist with foxes, badgers and genets, among others.
